Privacy Policy

I use Google Analytics 4 (property G-SWGTMV2T1W) to see how many people visit, which pages they read, and roughly where they are in the world. This tells me which work is worth writing more about. I do not use it for advertising, and I do not run ads on this site.

Google Analytics collects your approximate location derived from your IP address, your browser and device type, the pages you view, referring links, and a randomly generated identifier stored in a cookie. I do not attempt to identify individual visitors, and I do not combine analytics data with contact form submissions.

Analytics is enabled by default and runs until you decline. You can decline at any time using the cookie settings link below or in the site footer. Declining sets Google Consent Mode to a denied state, removes the analytics cookies already stored in your browser, and stops further cookies being written. Advertising signals (ad_storage, ad_user_data, ad_personalization) are denied for every visitor at all times.

If you submit the contact form, it sends the name, email address, subject, and message you type, plus a website URL if you choose to add one. I use this only to reply to you. Submissions are stored on the server that runs this site and are not sold, shared, or added to a mailing list.

If you would like your submission deleted, email me and I will remove it.

These are the only items this site stores in your browser:

• _ga, _ga_* Google Analytics cookies holding a randomly generated visitor identifier. Set only while analytics consent is granted. Expire after two years, or immediately when you decline.
• cookie-consent Records whether you accepted or declined analytics, so you are not asked again. Stored in local storage, not a cookie, and never sent to a server.
• theme Remembers whether you chose the light or dark theme. Stored in local storage, not a cookie, and never sent to a server.

The site also loads fonts from Google Fonts, which means your browser contacts Google's servers to fetch them. This is a normal request for a font file and sets no cookies, though Google receives your IP address as part of it.

You can change your analytics preference at any time. This works whichever choice you made before.

You can also block analytics entirely with a browser extension or your browser's own tracking protection, and clear stored data through your browser settings. Nothing on this site depends on analytics, so blocking it does not break anything.

Depending on where you live, you may have the right to request a copy of the personal data I hold about you, ask for it to be corrected or deleted, or object to how it is used. In practice the only personal data I hold is what you typed into the contact form. To make a request, email me at the address below.

Please note this site sets analytics on by default rather than asking first, which means analytics may run before you make a choice. If you prefer that not to happen, decline using the cookie settings link and the preference will persist on future visits.
