Top 3% Toptal Developer

Abdullah Sajjad is a Top 3% Toptal developer who builds custom Squarespace websites for businesses in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Europe, the Middle East, and Australia. Projects start at $1,500 for a template-based business site, $3,000 for custom design and code, and $4,500 for e-commerce and API-driven builds, each with a fixed quote after a free consultation. A typical site launches in 2 to 4 weeks.

Custom work happens through code injection, per-page code blocks, and the custom CSS editor on standard Squarespace plans, no Developer Mode required. Recent Squarespace projects include StudioVerso (live instructor search and a custom Spotify widget), McCann Realtors & Sons (property search and vacation rentals for a family business operating since 1939), and Rumby (e-commerce and booking).

He also develops professionally on WordPress, so platform recommendations are honest rather than a sales pitch.

Deliverables

What My Squarespace Development Services Include

Squarespace development services can mean anything from tweaking a template to engineering a fully custom build, so here is exactly what mine cover. Whether you arrive with finished design files, a rough idea, or an existing site that needs deeper Squarespace website development work, these are the deliverables we scope together.

Design & Build

  • Pixel-perfect builds from your Figma, PSD, or Adobe XD files, translated into a custom Squarespace website that matches the mockup down to the spacing
  • Squarespace templates customized until they no longer read as templates: typography, color, and layout tuned to your brand
  • Responsive design QA across phones, tablets, and desktops, so layouts hold up at every breakpoint, not just the one in the design file
  • Custom CSS and JavaScript for animations, interactive widgets, and behavior the drag-and-drop editor cannot produce on its own

Commerce & Marketing

  • Online stores on Squarespace Commerce: product catalogs, checkout flows, shipping and tax rules, and payment gateways configured end to end
  • E-commerce solutions beyond the defaults: digital products, subscriptions, booking flows, and inventory synced with external tools
  • Email marketing integration with Squarespace Campaigns, Mailchimp, or the platform you already use, wired into forms and checkout
  • Review and testimonial embeds that support your reputation management by putting social proof on the pages where buying decisions happen

SEO Foundations

  • Squarespace's built-in SEO tools configured properly: page titles, metadata, social sharing images, and clean URL structures on every page
  • Structured data added through code injection so search engines understand your pages instead of just crawling them
  • Automatic SSL certificates verified, redirects mapped, and sitemaps submitted to Google Search Console

Content & Handover

  • Content management setup: page templates, blog structure, and collections organized so your team can publish without a developer
  • Third-party integrations connected through code injection: CRMs, booking systems, maps, and external data feeds
  • A guided walkthrough at launch, so updating pages, products, and posts feels routine rather than risky

Under the Hood

Developer Mode, Code Blocks, and Custom Code

One question comes up in almost every consultation: do you need Squarespace Developer Mode to get a truly custom site? Almost never. It was a feature of legacy Squarespace 7.0 that exposed raw template files for direct editing, and Squarespace no longer offers it for new builds. Modern Squarespace web development runs on a different toolset, and that toolset is more capable than most people expect.

On the current Squarespace platform, custom work flows through three channels: site-wide code injection for scripts and styles, code blocks for dropping HTML, CSS, or JavaScript into individual pages, and the custom CSS editor for design overrides. The property search on the McCann Realtors site, the live instructor filtering and the Spotify widget on StudioVerso, all of it was built through those channels on standard Squarespace plans.

Where the legacy developer platform still matters is older 7.0 sites that were built on it. If you are maintaining one, I can work within it, and I can also plan a sensible migration to Squarespace 7.1 and Fluid Engine before the aging stack becomes a liability.

The practical takeaway: if a provider quotes extra for special developer access, ask what they actually mean. On today's plans, code injection and per-page custom code cover the vast majority of real-world requirements while keeping your site inside the drag-and-drop editor your team already knows.

Why It Matters

Why Hire a Dedicated Squarespace Developer?

Anyone can pick a Squarespace template and fill in the blanks. That is exactly the problem: your site ends up looking like thousands of others, loading slower than it should, and quietly losing visitors who never call, book, or buy. A dedicated Squarespace developer closes the gap between "we have a website" and "our website brings in business."

I work in the layer most Squarespace users never touch: custom CSS and JavaScript injection, template markup, third-party APIs, and structured data. That is how you get unique layouts, custom animations, booking systems, property search, and integrations that Squarespace does not offer out of the box, while keeping the drag-and-drop editor your team already knows how to use.

It also means the invisible work gets done right. Meta tags, schema markup, image optimization, Core Web Vitals, redirects, and analytics are set up correctly from day one, so search engines can actually find and rank you. As a Squarespace expert and Top 3% Toptal developer who also builds on WordPress, React, and Node.js, I bring full-stack engineering discipline to a platform most people treat as a site builder.

The result: a site that launches in weeks, looks like it cost five times what it did, and keeps working without a retainer, because Squarespace handles hosting, security, and updates for you.

One Partner, Both Roles

Squarespace Web Designer or Developer: Which Do You Need?

Clients usually search for a Squarespace web designer when the goal is look and feel, and a developer when the goal is custom functionality. Most projects need both. As a Squarespace web designer, I turn brand guidelines and Figma files into polished layouts, typography, and color systems inside the editor. As a developer, I add the custom CSS, JavaScript, and API integrations the visual tools cannot produce.

Hiring one Squarespace expert for both roles means no handoff between a design freelancer and a coding freelancer, one fixed quote, and a site where the design and the code were built to work together.

Honest Advice

Squarespace or WordPress? I Build on Both

Most agencies push whichever platform they happen to sell. I develop professionally on both, so my only incentive is recommending the one that fits your project. Here is how I usually call it.

Squarespace fits best when you want

  • A beautiful business site, portfolio, or small store live in 2 to 4 weeks
  • Zero maintenance: hosting, security, and updates handled for you
  • An editor your team can use without ever calling a developer
  • Predictable monthly costs with no plugin licenses to manage

WordPress fits best when you need

  • Custom plugins, memberships, or complex business logic
  • Deep API integrations with CRMs, ERPs, or internal tools
  • Full ownership and control over hosting, data, and code
  • A large content operation with custom editorial workflows

Choosing a Partner

Freelance Developer vs Squarespace Development Companies

Search for Squarespace experts and you will find everything from marketplace gig sellers to full-service Squarespace development companies with account managers and monthly retainers. Both models can be right. The honest question is what your project actually needs.

A senior freelancer fits when you want

  • Direct access to the person doing the work: you talk to the developer, not an account manager relaying notes
  • One accountable expert across the whole build: I work as both Squarespace web designer and developer, so nothing is lost in handoffs
  • Senior output without agency overhead, since you are not funding office space, sales teams, or layers of management
  • A verifiable track record: Top 3% on Toptal, 8+ years of engineering experience, and 250+ projects delivered

An agency fits when you need

  • Several sites shipped in parallel across multiple brands or locations
  • Guaranteed same-day coverage across time zones under a service-level agreement
  • Full-service marketing bundles: paid ads, content production, and social media alongside the build
  • Procurement rules that require contracting a company rather than an individual

Development companies earn their overhead on large, multi-workstream engagements. For a single custom Squarespace website, a redesign, or ongoing custom work on an existing site, most Squarespace web development projects are better served by a senior freelancer: the same expertise, a shorter line of communication, and a leaner invoice. And if your project genuinely calls for an agency, I will say so on our first call.

Remote First

Working With Clients Worldwide

Squarespace website development is remote-friendly by nature, and so is my process. I work with businesses across the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Europe, Dubai and the Middle East, and Australia. Clear scopes, shared project boards, and calls scheduled in your timezone keep projects moving no matter where you are. Based in the UAE? See my dedicated Squarespace developer in Dubai page. And if you want to customize your own site first, my free Squarespace code snippets are the same customizations I use on client builds.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I build my site on Squarespace or WordPress?
It depends on your project, and I build on both platforms, so you get an honest answer rather than a sales pitch. Squarespace is a great fit for service businesses, portfolios, restaurants, and small e-commerce stores that want a polished site with zero maintenance. WordPress is the better choice when you need custom plugins, complex integrations, memberships, or full control over your stack. On our first call I'll tell you which one actually fits your goals and budget.
How much does a Squarespace developer cost?
My Squarespace projects typically start around $1,500 for a template-based business site and range up to $6,000+ for fully custom builds with e-commerce, third-party integrations, or heavy custom code. Every project gets a fixed quote up front after a free consultation, so there are no surprise invoices.
Do you work with clients outside North America?
Yes. I work remotely with clients worldwide, including the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Europe, Dubai and the wider Middle East, and Australia. Everything runs async-friendly: clear scopes, shared project boards, and scheduled calls in your timezone.
Can you migrate my site to or from Squarespace?
Both directions. I migrate WordPress, Wix, and Webflow sites into Squarespace, and when a business outgrows Squarespace I move them onto WordPress with a custom theme. Content, SEO settings, redirects, and analytics all come along, so you keep your rankings through the switch.
Can you customize Squarespace beyond the templates?
Yes. I use custom CSS, JavaScript code injection, and third-party integrations to extend Squarespace far beyond its default capabilities. Custom animations, unique layouts, advanced forms, and API connections are all possible.
Do I need Squarespace Developer Mode for a custom site?
Almost never. Developer Mode belongs to legacy Squarespace 7.0 and is not offered for new sites. On current 7.1 builds, custom work happens through code injection, per-page custom code, and the custom CSS editor, which together handle custom layouts, animations, widgets, and API integrations. Every Squarespace project in my portfolio was built this way on standard plans.
Can you build a Squarespace site from my Figma, PSD, or Adobe XD design?
Yes. Pixel-perfect implementation from design files is one of my core Squarespace development services. I translate your layouts into a fully custom website on Squarespace, matching typography, spacing, and interactions as closely as the platform allows, and I flag anything that needs adapting before the build starts.
Do you handle Squarespace e-commerce?
Absolutely. I build online stores on Squarespace Commerce with custom product pages, optimized checkout flows, shipping configurations, tax settings, and payment gateway integration. Whether it is a small e-commerce site or a larger catalog, I also connect email marketing and analytics platforms like Mailchimp.
How long does a Squarespace project take?
A typical Squarespace website takes 2 to 4 weeks from kickoff to launch, depending on the number of pages, custom features, and content readiness. Simple sites can be completed faster.
Will I be able to update the site myself?
Yes. Squarespace has an intuitive content management system that makes it easy for non-technical users to update content, add blog posts, manage products, and make basic design changes. I provide a walkthrough session so you feel confident managing your site.
Do I need a Squarespace web designer or a developer?
For most projects, the same person should handle both, and that is how I work. A Squarespace web designer shapes layout, typography, color, and brand feel inside the editor, while a developer adds the custom CSS, JavaScript, and integrations the editor cannot produce on its own. I cover the full range as one Squarespace expert: design implementation from your brand or Figma files, plus the custom code behind features like property search and interactive widgets. You get one quote, one point of contact, and no handoff gaps between design and build.
